ACHIEVEMENTS

 

The Home has effectively rehabilitated a Doctor, Nurses, Professional Teachers and Pastors. Others are Police Women, Army Captian and Bankers. Non professionals have also been trained to live economically sustainable lives. The Home now houses up to 55 residents and 350 have already passed out since its inception in 1986.

The Kumasi Cheshire Home has it especially train 20 people in foot wear making , hairdressing and chemicals production under livelihoods Programme 2010/2011. This training was implemented with financial support from the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission through the Leonard Cheshire Disability West Africa Regional Office (LCD WARO).

The chemicals production comprises hair food , hair shampoo, hair conditioner, liquid soap and antiseptics making. Beneficiaries were empowered with trade skills to enable them  live financially sustainable life on leaving the Home . They will therefore create wealth to forestall relapses (arising from poverty) and provide respite for families.

 

CHALLENGES

 

Funding: Donations are unpredictable and can therefore not be factored into budgets. The Home can hardly meet her numerous challenges.

About us

Kumasi Cheshire home is a non-profit making and non-government organization established by Catholic Archbishop Emeritus Dr Peter Kwesi Sarpong of Kumasi Archdiocese with the support from some concerned citizens and other churches leaders in 1986.

The Home was established to rehabilitate and reintegrate adult psychiatric patients, with ages ranging from 18 to 55 years, back into their  communities safe and sound . The rehabilitation programme takes 9 to 18 months and the maximum bed capacity is 55.

Epileptic patients are however not admitted because management of epilepsy is challenging.

 

VISION: To help the mentally ill become economically, psychologically and socially useful people in the society.

 

MISSON:

-To provide half way-home for discharged psychiatric patients

-To rehabilitate and reintegrate psychiatric patients into their communities organizations with similar objectives

-To enable service users live financially independent life

 

ACTIVITES

Kumasi  Cheshire Home rehabilitates discharged psychiatric patients in Ghana , for effective reintegration into their communities safe and sound.

The Home undertakes the following as her main activities:

-Continuous medication

-Occupational therapy

-Guidance and counseling

-Religious activities

-Follow up/ Aftercare

-Passed out service users visits the Home for replenishment of their medication free of charge Curtsey Ministry of Health (Ghana Health Service) through Accra Psychiatric Hospital Pharmacy.

-The Home provides field for students for 5th year medical science students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Sience and Technology (KNUST) /Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Phyisian Assistants Psychiatry Community Mental Health Officers’ students from Kintampo college of Health.

-Again Rotation Nurses are posted to do their psychiatry affiliation

-Kumasi Cheshire Home is a partner of Leonard Cheshire Disability Global Ailiance and a member of the West Africa Regional Council with Headquarters in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

 

FUNDING:

As a non-governmental and non profit organization, her main funds come from donations from philanthropic organization and individuals and token fees paid by parents or guardians of service users.

The Ghana Health Service , through Accra Psychiatric Hospital , provides free medications. The psychiatric nurse is on secondment at the Home.
