SOCIAL OBLIGATIONS OF THE CHURCH IN GHANA

The church is one of the powerful institutions in this country Ghana.  Since its emergence in this country, it has brought about many reformations into the society of Ghana.  A lot of things have progressed positively, some has moved from bad to better, others too from better to best. The church as it stands is a supernatural body, which means that the church deals with things of the spirit as well as things of the physical. Even though the church is more often seen dealing with things that are spiritual such as; praying, fasting, healing, deliverance and many others, it still has a lot of physical contributions to the society of Ghana.

For instance, when Jesus Christ was on earth, there was a time in his ministry where the people who were following while preaching were very hungry and needed food to eat. And the people who were following were too many to be fed. But Jesus who is the foundation and the head of the church insisted that they should be fed at all cost. And the disciples went and brought fives loaves of bread and two fishes which belong to a boy. And Jesus took it and gave thanks and started sharing among the people. And everyone ate and was full.  If the church had no social obligations, the head of the church wouldn’t have bothered himself about the social need of the people.

Now these are some of the social obligations of the church in Ghana; EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, JOBS, MORAL STANDARD OF THE PEOPLE, PRODUCE QUALITY LEADERS FOR THE NATION and many others.

Education

The church has a strong obligation when it comes to educational system of this country. To educate is to give knowledge to or develop the abilities of somebody by teaching. This is where the church is much needed to teach the right information to be able to develop the individual for the better. For instance when we consider the educational system of America where witchcraft is taught in school as a subject, has created a lot of confusion in their society. No wonder a lot of vice behavior is in the united state of America. But if the church was in place of their educational system, it wouldn’t have taught this barbaric thing called witchcraft. So the church has a great responsibility in establishing schools from nursery to tertiary. And not establishing schools but also seeing to it that quality information is given to the wards which will not destroy their future both on earth and in eternity.

Health care

The church as well has an obligation of seeing to it that the health of the people is one of its priorities. Without good health care the society is down in every aspect. Production will be very low, and development will be impaired. And if the society the church is in prospers, the church will also prosper. Therefore the church should be able to establish hospitals and clinics in the society to cater for the health needs of the people. Those illnesses that should be dealt with spiritually too should be attended to by the church and not to be left in the hands of fetish and spirits. Even drugs sold at this health centers established by the church should be less expensive so that the poor in the society can also purchase.

JOBS

The church should be able to create job opportunities for the society as an obligation of the church. The bible says” the hand that does not work must not eat .” therefore the church should be in the position of establishing job opportunities like farming, transport, catering centers, banks, schools etc. for the society for people to get their daily bread. Now when this happens a lot of people who are indulging themselves in horrible acts such as arm robbery, prostitution, etc will find something better doing to indulge in such disgraceful acts. When this happens it would take a lot of these vice behaviors in our society. Even though some people no matter what you do will still continue in their vice behavior, but majority of people when they get jobs to do will not even get the time to fool.

MORAL STANDARDS OF THE PEOPLE

The church in Ghana has a strong responsibility when it comes to the moral aspect of the society. The church is supposed to teach our moral standards especially to upcoming generations; else it will bring disaster to our society. Most of these young generations coming take their moral standards from the media [television, video, internet etc.] which is very dangerous and destroying. So the church is obliged to teach the society morals such as; respect for the elderly, greetings, dressing, choice of words when speaking and many more. Now a days that the church has relaxed in the teaching of morals, we see the kind of dressing the society now dress, especially with our ladies, it is very awful and disgusting. But if the church will strongly teach the society some of these valued morals, it will take the society very far. In the olden days where modest dressing was preached, rape cases were rear.  But now is so rampant because of loosed moral standards.

PRODUCE QUALITY LEADERS FOR THE SOCIETY.

It is the social obligation of the church to train good leaders for the society. Leaders with integrity and accountability. Most especially in Ghana here, the society is weeping bitterly because of the kind of leaders we have. Some will come with the face of angels, but when appointed will show their real selfish and careless behavior. Nowadays in Ghana, nobody trusts the politicians, because they have failed the society with their lies.  But if the church would have taken it upon them to train people to be loyal and honest not just with book knowledge, but with the fear of GOD, I believe strongly that it would have lessen the burden of the society. For instance when we look at our current chief justice in the person of Theodora Georgina Wood, she is doing a great job in the government.  She had a firm training from the Assemblies of God church and stands for the truth and nothing else. Other justices are taken bribe here and there, cocaine powder turning into baking powder which is lies. But if the churches train the up and coming generation to fear God and to love fellow humans, it would have been a blessing.

THE CHURCH’S INVOLVEMENT IN MISSIONS

Central Church has since it’s birth been in the forefront of the battle to win souls for the kingdom of God. This vision has been manifested in various ways, but particularly in evangelism. Central Assembly of God has a tradition of mothering churches, both within the limits of Kumasi and in the surrounding towns and villages. The tradition started the years of Rev. Wiles where dedicated members joined him in his Jeep to hold crusades in the villages. Churches like Kwadaso, Apatrapa, Duase, Danase are a testimony.

In 1980’s and 1990’s with the church population increasing and members scattered all over Kumasi, branch churches were opened to the people to go there. Some of the areas were: Bantama, Amakom, South Suntreso, Suame, Ayigya, Oforikrom, Ahodwo, Dichemso, Fumesua, Kwamo, Kotei, Ayeduase, Tikrom, Kentinkrono, Juaben and many more. All these churches were looking at Central Church as their mother church. Currently the church has preaching points of Asafo, Asawasi, Aboabo, Ashanti New Town, Akwatialine as a place where people meet in the morning.

EDUCATION

The first Bible School of Southern Ghana now situated at Saltpond actually began at the basement of the church. Later on it was moved to the Mission house. Among those who graduated from the Kumasi Bible School were Rev. Gyanfosu, Rev. Opare Kwafo, Rev. Forkuo, Rev. Afful and Rev. Ackah.

The church has established a school known as Lighthouse School. The school starts from Nursery/Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High. There are about one thousand two hundred pupils in the school.

CHURCH CHOIR/SINGING GROUPS

The Church Choir was formed in 1946 by Rev. Wiles. It was all male choir until 1954 when women joined. There are about five other singing groups in the church.

LANDS

The Church has got a land at Ayeduase. It has been used for a Retreat Center. The land serving as the Headquarters of Ashanti Region, School and Grace Church was acquired by the Lighthouse Church. Currently the church runs two services, English and Twi.
